FULL Collected WORKS - Vol. 1 (of 8): Ascetic experiments. Part I

By St. Ignatius Bryanchaninov

Brethren We have lost, through arbitrary sin, holy integrity, untouchable not only with sinful business, but also with the knowledge of evil - integrity, in the spiritual radiance of which we came into being from the hands of the Creator. We have lost the integrity that we received when we were recreated by Baptism; we have stained our robes, whitened by the Redeemer, on the path of life with various sins. We still have one more water for washing, the water of repentance. What will happen to us when we neglect this ablution? We will have to present ourselves to God with souls disfigured by sin, - and He looks menacingly at the defiled soul, condemns it to the fire of hell.
