Fulanita Number 3

A third body is found in Charleston. Each an unidentified Hispanic girl, a fulanita. Sergeant Leroy Kelley, head of the Special Victims Unit, finds this third girl seriously injured, but still clinging to life. Child sex traffickers are operating in the low country of South Carolina, and Kelley must keep the survival of their third victim secret. But why are these children being killed? Where are the traffickers? Where are these children from? And how are they forced into sexual slavery? The Department of Social Services in Columbia assumes custody of the unidentified girl, and Dr. Kim Lee is sent to Charleston to help Kelley's SVU team interview the girl. Kelley quickly learns that the survivor is a brave thirteen-year-old from Ecuador, named Naomi Alvarez. She will be the key to finding the murderous traffickers, but will he find them before they find her? Some of the scenes in Fulanita Number 3 are, by nature, chilling and graphic. Acts of violence and sex are implied, rather than explicit. For this author, to tone down the brutality of such crimes against children would be unconscionable and a disservice to those children. Estimates of how many children are being trafficked in the U.S. very widely, but an estimated 50,000 children annually are brought into the U.S. by traffickers to be sexually exploited. Within the setting of a crime novel, it is my desire to raise the awareness of my readers about the scourge of child sex trafficking. The author's research included reading many first-hand accounts of teenage victims of sex trafficking. Elements of their stories helped me create Mel, the head of the trafficking gang, and also appear in both Naomi and Dr. Lee. Victims of sex trafficking are sometimes called overcomers, especially in Christian circles. In Fulanita Number 3, good must overcome evil, faith must overcome disbelief, love will must overcome hate, wholeness must overcome brokenness, if Naomi Alvarez is to overcome her traffickers.
