Published by Lutheran Pioneer Press For sixteen years Missionary Nurse Helen Frost lived at Igloo in the Sawtooth Mountains seventy miles from Nome. In emergencies, Helen cared for the sick or injured in her home. In the fall and winter, the families lived in the village, hunting and trapping while the children attended school. She often said, "Alaska is a place where you go ahead and do things you never had expected to do or thought you could do." As the village nurse, she was often the doctor and the dentist. During the war she was at times the school teacher, store keeper, the postmistress who radioed daily weather reports, the marriage commissioner, orchestra director, dressmaker, village cop...and excellent photographer. Helen later served at Teller, Shishmaref and Sitka. The book also covers her retirement years, tributes, funeral service and a bibliography section. Map on inside cover.
