This is a story of a one who came from a blue-collar family, no rich folks and no poor folks to speak of - just a "normal" sort of nuclear family in North Carolina, one of the thirteen colonies of the United States. This story is meant to inspire. It is meant to inspire the traveler in all of us and there is certainly a traveler - an explorer in all of us. In early elementary school years Shane would thrive on making penpals from faraway places. With the advent of the internet in the 1990's, millions would be enabled to instantly communicate with each other, placing a penpal from anywhere on someone's desktop. For Shane this would supersede the fun of pen paling and create desires of traveling and visiting faraway places. We Americans are rather hidden from the rest of the world. This is something that happens to show itself best when one is traveling to another part of the world and becomes able to penetrate the feelings of someone who is not American. More times out of none it was greeted with fascination of Americans in general. I remember a lady at a certain European destination (Montenegro) I had the opportunity to visit say, "Americans, they are all the same,". She said it calmly and without hesitation, but ... that's all she said in English. This left me thinking, "What the heck does that mean?" Are we all the same in a good way or in a bad way? Just the answer to this alone would have sufficed. We didn't bother to ask. Shane will take you with him, in his best literary sense, to the more than two dozen nations he's had the opportunity to visit and explore. Before one begins to expect a journey of famous places that everyone knows about, be happy to know - these will include journeys to places that are lesser heard of and that millions are not flocking to immediately upon their exit from the United States. These are places such as the Sumida district of Japan, Tokyo to be exact. This is the home of Sumo wrestling and hosts the Tokyo Sky Tree. The second highest structure in the world aside from the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Dubai is another example of a not-so visited iconic tourist area. Other than an indoor ski slope mall and host of the tallest structure in the world, Dubai hosts many other reasons to visit this gulf island nation. Yes, Dubai itself is inland, but it has constructed islands that are part of Dubai - wow. Let's go explore some aspects of life as a wanderer and treat this wandering desire with its therapy - the journey.
