From the Ridiculous to the Sublime
by Walter Hunt
Walter Hunt's first football memory is of watching the 1953 FA Cup Final, the famous Stanley Matthews Final, on television at the age of five. Since that day football has been a constant part of his life in many different ways.
He recalls watching football at almost every level, from international matches to local youth leagues, playing and refereeing at the lower levels of the sport, volunteering at his local community club as a member of its media team, and more.
In recent years he has presented papers at international football history conferences, including a detailed study of the 1953 FA Cup Final that first stimulated his interest in the sport.
From comical playing and refereeing incidents to the joy of watching his local community club win the final of the FA Vase at Wembley, his football memories range from the ridiculous to the sublime.
