According to Farge (1992), it is clear that traditional Fourier analysis is not viable in the investigation of phenomena that have non-stationary signals or even those in which the signal undergoes sudden frequency variations. This deficiency requires the use of a technique known as the Simple Wavelet Transform (SWT), which has moving windows, in time or space, that expand or compress to capture low and high frequency signals, respectively. This book shows, in a historical context, the need to use STW as an important tool (technique) in the investigation of non-stationary phenomena.
