The linocuts of East Oakland artist Chamuco Cortez come to us inspired by a legacy of Mexican popular art. From the pre-revolutionary days of Jos? Guadalupe Posada, through the generations of the Taller de Gr?fica Popular, Mexico and its diaspora have a deep history of using art to translate community struggles and celebrations. Chamuco gives us a unique opportunity to witness the reinvigoration of our ancestral arts, blending past and present and using the same techniques Posada and the artists of the Taller used. Their goal was to bring art to the people, to communicate information for resistance, and to convey pride in la lucha. Chamuco masterfully does the same here with From East Oakland with Love, pairing select works with poetry by Oakland writers.
