From an Old Johnny:: Personal Recollections and Experiences in the Confederate Army, Annotated.

The author of this book, James Dinkins, "the little Confederate," was an exceptional man. He was barely 16 when he joined the Confederate army and served first in Virginia, and then in the Army of Tennessee, outstandingly under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. As the War Between the States progressed, Dinkins would become the youngest commissioned officer in the CSA. He participated in over 27 battles, and has a wealth of stories to share. These recollections run the length and breadth of a soldier's life. His tales are heart rendering, horrifying, exhilarating, adrenaline charged, exhausting, and even side-splittingly funny. One does not have to be a "Civil War Buff" to enjoy this book, but the reader just might beome an enthusiast before the book is finished. Dinkins died in 1939 (age 94) as the oldest ranking member of the Confederacy, and the last member of the Army of Tennessee. He was buried at Lakelawn Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans, dressed in his Confederate uniform. The editor, a former history teacher and living history re-enactor, has added much supplemental material to this book, including an exoneration of Forrest and Chalmers at Fort Pillow, and pictures of the Forrest family from her own personal collection.
