As a child Dardenne had difficulty connecting with his peers. He found himself attracted to adrenaline based activities, and he never felt alive unless he was participating in extreme sports. This need for excitement followed him into adulthood. Though he tried to be a man of faith, a negative experience turned him away from the church. In his quest for freedom and pleasure, Dardenne engaged in more dangerous activities. He started drinking excessively, using drugs and pursuing women to feel any sense of validation or self worth. None of these activities, however, made him feel fulfilled, and he wondered what his lifes purpose was. After a life-changing motorcycle accident, Dardenne reflected on his past and realized that he needed to recommit himself to God. In his hour of need, Dardenne learned the true meaning of freedom.
