Usman Albad is a young man from Saudi Arabia who comes to study in England in search of adventure and better career prospects. The reader is transported between student life in an English university in the early 1980's and Usmans' life at home in sun soaked Jeddah. We gain amusing insights into his perception of life in England and the ways of people there and his changing self perception as he begins to question his own cultural upbringing. As Usman builds a strong network of interesting friends he finds himself increasingly drawn into experiences and activities that were never options for him at home. As Usman becomes increasingly immersed in his new life he discovers that his original cultural perspective on life is starting to influence his English friends and he finds himself having to take on responsibilities for their changing understanding of the world as well as facing some uncomfortable truths about his own situation. As the story reaches an unpredictable series of climaxes it seems that whichever way Usman decides to turn he must hurt both himself and some of those whom he loves most dearly. The fast paced story will move you to regular laughter and occasional tears and is certain to cause you to look with renewed interest at even the most mundane parts of your daily life.
