Fredrick William Lander was best known for his death-defying feats: crossing the Rocky Mountains as in a party of seven and being the only survivor after three weeks, using a pistol from horseback to shoot and kill a boar grizzly bear, fight a band of revenge-filled Indians, and leading several battles early in the Civil War. But he was also an artist. He published a short story based loosely on his Rocky Mountian journey, and wrote numerous poems, several about the Civil War which were published as well. Here in this book are the known literary works a truly remarkable man.
