Frankenstein: The Shadow Of Frankenstein Volume 1

Following his lab's explosion, Henry and Elizabeth Frankenstein head to London for a rest (and to avoid possible criminal charges). The monster, still alive, follows, but winds up in the Whitechapel district. There, he's mistaken for a disfigured, mentally disabled man and befriended by local prostitutes. When one of the whores is horribly murdered, the creature roams the area, hoping to protect the survivors. This brings him in contact with the real killer - Jack the Ripper...

A must-read for fans of the Universal monster movies!

If you have watched Universal's Bride of Frankenstein, then you will surely have an appreciation for Stefan Petrucha's "The Shadow of Frankenstein". The story's premise takes off where Bride ends, and we see Henry Frankenstein and his wife flee to England. Just as Henry tries to lead a semblance of a normal life, his past catches up with him - in the form of the monster he created and also a link to a serial killer, Jack the Ripper. I liked this association that Petrucha draws between Henry, the monster and Jack the Ripper, but above all, what held my interest was the way in which Petrucha portrays Henry's keen scientific- driven desire to understand how and why the Monster behaves the way he does - having to do with the notion of a defective brain. As for the Ripper thread - well, here the Ripper is alive and well, even though his dastardly crimes were committed more than 50 yrs before. Apparently, the Ripper has been dabbling in the occult and has found a way to live longer, but the process is degenerating and he wants Henry to help him live on. All in all, I found "The Shadow of Frankenstein" an enthralling read and fans of the genre won't be disappointed!

Frank is Back!

There's no denying it, with the release of Dick Briefer's THE MONSTER OF FRANKENSTEIN, Universal's 75th ANIVERSERY EDDITION OF FRANKENSTEIN, and now Dark Horse's SHADOW OF FRANKSTEIN, this is a great year for monster lovers! In this incarnation, Stefan Petrucha teams the patchwork living corpse with Jack the Ripper for some bloody escapades. Written with fast moving pros that packs a powerful punch that will keep the reader highly entertained!

Enthralling!

I couldn't put this book down. It's smart, well written, and fascinating. Petrucha toys with the ideas of genius and madness, love and oppression, and violence as a last ditch bid for affection. Smart, fun stuff from somebody who knows the Frankenstein mythology enough to make it engaging for fans and newcomers alike.

Loved it !

This book was a fun and exciting return to the world of an iconic movie monster, Frankenstien . It really captured that "Saturday afternoon" monster movie feel I used to love as a kid. Despite his YA successes, this is no kids book. Stefan Petrucha delivers an intriguing tale that is a hell of a good read ! Highly recommended !

Frankenstein: The Shadow of Frankenstein: Volume 1

This is a totally imaginative tale that takes the story of Frankenstein one step further. It answers the question, "What next?" And then gives it a wicked and wonderful twist beyond that. Enter, Jack the Ripper. You don't have to be a fan or expert of either classic story (although, I'm certain it does add to the enjoyment) because Stefan Petrucha makes this work as its own inventive tale. The pace is rip-roaring. The dark plotlines grab you by the throat. The writing is so strong and so is the tension. The sense of atmosphere hits the mark on every page. The characters are complex, totally engaging and well-drawn. The story even, at times, has a sense of humor. I especially love the parts that are told from the point of view of the monster. One of those highly recommended reads that will satisfy old Frankenstein fans, and bring in new ones.
