Book Overview

This book is regarded as the perfect introduction to casting common hot metals in moulds, providing all the information needed by amateur foundrymen.

Since 1954, when Foundrywork for the Amateur was first published, the advance of technology and engineering has been enormous and there have been many revisions along the way. However, conditions in the 21st century are so far removed from the state of affairs in the 1950s that, although the basic principle of the foundry remains the same, the language and the presentation of the book was due to be uplifted. This present edition therefore represents a complete rewrite to conform to the era and, in particular, to the availability of material which at one time was taken for granted. It also reflects the author's growing interest in the model steam locomotive.

Old school keeping it simple still works.

This volume is typical of any published by MAP reprints and revised editions bring the way it was done for the hobbyist. In the day. Before everything had to have a digital read out/computer controlled what ever. This gives enough information to a shop person with some experience. The knowledge to cast some small parts, make the pattern and a furnace. By far there are more numerous books out there, with more info and flashier layout. But they could not give you the basic knowledge in 8 chapters. In the ninth chapter he goes over a small scale cupola drop bottom furnace. If for nothing else the explanation of how it operates. The drawings are old school text book style, clear line drawings with notation. the few B & W photos are clear enough to see what they wanted you to. For some one who wants an idea of how to do it, for the price this is the one. I own it. and It was a light couple hour read.
