This is a comprehensive textbook concerning the history, sociology, and politics of the vast landscape of Canadian adult education. The volume is composed primarily of the work of four principle authors and supplemented by the writings of four others covering specialized topics. Efforts have been made to include perspectives on labour, women's issues, and Quebec. The text devotes considerable space to the role of public policy in adult education and offers up-to-date material on the vocation of the field and "future prospects." This excellent reference work covering such a wide array of topics on adult education in Canada is marred by its dry, factual tone, perhaps a result of its surfeit of authors, or their academic backgrounds. It is unfortunate that Canada's rich, proud, and colourful heritage of adult education is presented in such monochrome. The book resembles an edited anthology and it would have worked better if it had been presented as one. If the writers had the freedom to craft their own voice in separate chapters the pages would perhaps read less like ones assembled by a committee. The use of footnotes to cite references is an awkward conveyance for the reader looking to scan a master list, although a comprehensive index helps mitigate this problem.
