Captivating and Honest

This novel commands you to both keep reading and keep thinking. The author carefully navigates the limited insights given concerning Christ's childhood with a story that compels the reader to think and enjoy. An easy read with colorful descriptions and a lets keep moving pace. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good tale.

A Touch of Drama

After one chapter of reading I was hooked. I fell in love with it because of the drama and color it added to a story that was already close to my heart. It makes sense that even as a child Jesus was influencing the lives of those around him. Did Jesus supernatural conception cause problems for his earthly parents? How did the sizzling political climate of Rome vs. Judaism affect Jesus' rearing? And the biggest question in my mind: What would it be like to be tasked with raising God incarnate? These are questions that always tickle my brain when I read the sparse account of Jesus' childhood. I was pleased with the author's success in both respecting the facts and not pushing any personal agendas. But most of all I loved becoming engrossed in the lives of these biblical figures. They became even more real and amazing to me. I only wish there were more stories like this one that my overactive imagination could dive into.

brings Jesus' life to life

Even though the story is about Joseph the carpenter, this book gives such a great description of the childhood of Jesus, without the emphasis on Jesus the Mesiah. Rather, the emphasis is on how Jesus' life was impacted because of the man who stepped into the role of "dad" in his life, the man Joseph. I appreciate how things are sometimes raw and to the point in the book without being over the top because many Christian authors do not look at the human aspect of Jesus' life, what hurts he had, how his family nurtured his future behavior, the dangers to people besides Jesus in being a part of his life. It shows how flawed, but ernestly devout, Joseph was. Yes, it is fiction; there is not much written in history about Joseph the carpenter. This book gives one person's perspective on how it may have been without sacrificing any of the truths that are undoubtedly written in scripture. It gives a truly human feel to the stories that otherwise can become too familiar and too sacrosanct to relate to. I love the plain humanity that is found in thos book. It is a good and fairly quick read and definitely worth it.
