Maybe I'm biased because I've lived in Key West before, however this book will forever stand as a classic in my library. Call it a goofy adventure story. Call it an homage to Mel Fisher. Either way, the book's formula is fairly simple: compose a cast of witty characters, place them in an exotic and idealized version of Key West, and then send them after buried treasure. What you get is an entertaining read that won't make you think too hard while still delivering a surprising amount of literary substance. Also Bailey's characters are so lively and personable that you can't help but pick the book up every few years to visit these people who feel like old friends. Ultimately, "Fortune" delivers pretty much everything you could want out of a story in roughly 400 pages: action, adventure, humor, drama, romance, deception, greed, archeology, buried treasure; then finishes off with an ironically satisfying ending. Great read. Tons of fun. For the price of a used book, there's not much chance you won't find some enjoyment in the price.
