"Forgiveness": The Prelude to Love

A few years ago, the world was shaken as a gunman entered an Amish schoolhouse and shot a number of Amish girls. The Amish are well known for their non-violent ways. As an outpouring of love donations came in, the world was startled as the Amish elders first visited the gunman's widow, and afterwards insisted that a portion of the donations go to this family. The level of forgiveness this community demonstrated shamed the world. How could they forgive this man? This man had invaded their school and murdered their children. Why was it so important to express this forgiveness?Why is forgiveness so important to a Christian? Shouldwe forgive everyone, even non-believers? And last but not least, why would I call "forgiveness" the prelude to love?
