A rich reading experience

Louise Appell's novel is a well-crafted, wonderful, in-depth look at family, ethnicity, religion, and social history. Set in a French-Canadian, working-class milieu on the edge of Smith College in Northampton (where the author would eventually graduate), this novel is a great read and pays off with depth in character and a full portrayal of the undercurrent of problems that runs beneath the dailiness of lives. It's a moving tangle and the author brings it to life. As it is part of a planned triology, we have much to look forward to.

Inheritance and sibling rivalry

Who hasn't compared themselves to a sibling? Who hasn't wanted to be the favorite? Brothers and their expectations collide in this novel set in a Northampton, MA just before WWII. Not many writers have mined the experience of the French-speaking emigrants in the milltowns of New England but this writer has.

You can't stop reading till you find out how everything will turn out
