Rudy Pierre and his police partner Marty Fitzgerald are ambushed during a routine patrol. While Rudy is wounded in the arm and knocked unconscious, Marty is shot and dies at the scene. What follows is a series of out-of-body episodes that lead Rudy to find the killers.

Along the way, with Marty's help, Rudy becomes aware of what he's missing. Having often found himself alone, his friendship with Marty helps him understand that there is more to life than being on the job.

Before the tragic night, Marty and Rudy had only ridden together for a few months. But during that time, Rudy learns that having a family is a big part of being alive. Even after losing his closest friend, he finds he's not alone.

Whether due to his head wound, or through intervention from beyond, Rudy relives the final hours leading up to the ambush. During these experiences, he's merely an examiner and cannot affect or change anything that will take place - nor does he know what will take place the next minute.

From the start of the out-of-body episodes, Rudy's mind is shielded from knowing the course leading up to the attack. To him, while within these dreamlike states, the ambush hasn't taken place. Even if he knows what the future holds, he can't share what the future holds.

During these instances, he's merely a visitor. Marty and everyone else, including himself, taking part in the actual moment, cannot see or hear him. While he hears everything said and sees what takes place, he doesn't actively participate in the action.

Through dreamlike states, while recovering from the head wound, Rudy relives the moments leading up to the ambush. The course that follows makes him wonder whether he's losing his mind. Ultimately, the episodes provide valuable clues to help track down the killers.
