Ages 3 to 6 years. Hallinan has created charming artwork to accompany his light-hearted rhyming verse that introduces youngsters to the concept of being friends forever.
What first drew me into this book, are the incredibly wonderful color drawings filling every page. Even without words, so much information can be learned about Skip, the nearly bald-headed boy who likes to wear half-shirts, and Petey, the good natured dog, who seems to have an extensive t-shirt wardrobe. In particular the illustrator, Dorothy Louise Hall has a tremendous knack for depicting the outdoors. Her nature drawings, and rendering of a campfire with a sun setting in the background, evoke true feeling from the book's readers. Her dream monster is appropriately little-boy gross and slimy. Writer Barbara S. Cohen, also has a talent for creating a fine children's story, and manages to do so with few words. The friendship between dog and his boy are true and enjoyable. This is a fun book for any child's library, and my guess is that parents will enjoy the story too. Just watch out for renewed refrains of "Mom, I want a dog."
