A young, naive orphan, sheltered from outside influences, Anhinga sees the world he knows as one guided by moral leadership. He strives to be his best: studies at Deep Woods Academy, learns martial arts from Master Qui, reads The Book of Living Water, a book his departed mother left him and seeks to learn the will of the God-One. Ignorant of the dark powers that oppose his odyssey, lacking memory and knowledge of his first six years - years that define him, disoriented by the latent power of his VisionLink, he is compelled to excel at everything he undertakes to make sense of his life's journey. When the white stag, his spirit guardian, stalks him, Master Qui warns him he is chosen for a sacred but dangerous and other-worldly path. Sylvia, queen of dryads, sovereign of the forest, tells Anhinga that he is the paladin, savior of the trees spoken of in prophecy, but he rejects the honor. He is not ready to assume such a responsibility and unwilling to accept the implications of the woodsong. Uniting the opposing factions of the woods will surely bring violence and hardship for which he is unprepared.
