Forbidden Loves of China

Shanghai, a few weeks before Chinese New Year. Lin Yue is eighteen, a young makeup artist from Anhui, when the beauty salon that employs her lets her go for refusing to sign a false statement. Her wages are unpaid, her rent is due in four days, and her mother has just sent a photo of her bed, made up and waiting at home. Yue quietly refunds her train ticket and tells her family she is working through the holidays.

To get by, she follows her roommate Xu Na, twenty, into the world of private receptions: coat checks, trays, long nights paid in cash. There she meets two women who will change her life. Zhou Mei, a photographer, takes her picture without asking her to smile and, for the first time, makes Yue feel seen rather than looked at. Shen, an elegant event organizer, offers her work, advances, borrowed dresses and a generosity whose price only appears later, line by line, on statements that keep changing.

As Yue falls in love with Mei, discovering a love between women made of small gestures, shared meals and questions asked before a touch, she also learns what Na has silently felt for her, and what their tiny shared room has been hiding. Meanwhile the debts pile up, the sleeping pills a colleague once gave her turn into a habit, and Shen's "private evenings" lead her toward a night that will shatter her trust in her own judgment.

Around her gravitates a small, vivid world: Qiao and Lili, a couple who show her that two women can simply share a life; Bao, who works coat checks to pay for her apartment; Fen and Ailin, coworkers who agree to tell the truth; Tao, a sound technician who sees her safely home on her worst night. Through them, Yue discovers another Shanghai, far from the luxury halls, where people help each other with a borrowed iron, a hemmed pair of pants or a bowl of noodles split in two.

When everything collapses, Yue must decide what to tell, and to whom: to Mei, who wants to help too fast; to Na, who is fighting her own exhaustion; to a mother who travels to Shanghai and discovers how much her daughter has kept from her. With a lawyer, doctors, a hotline counselor and the friends she slowly learns to rely on, Yue begins to rebuild her life, not by becoming someone else, but by learning to say yes and no in her own words.

Forbidden Loves of China is a tender, unsentimental novel about a young bisexual woman finding her place in a city that offers as many traps as open doors. It explores consent, debt and the many forms of control that hide behind kindness, but also friendship, first love and the slow repair of a bond between a mother and her daughter. Written with restraint and precision, it never turns its heroine into a victim or a symbol: it stays close to her doubts, her lies, her courage and her mistakes, from the first refunded ticket to the long journey home. Beneath Shanghai's red lanterns, Emilie Lautrec follows a young woman who refuses to let anyone else rewrite her story.
