For Who For What defies everything you ever thought you knew about NFL All-Pro Running Back Ricky Watters. His account reaches beyond his glory days at the University of Notre Dame, the San Francisco... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I didn't know much about Ricky Watters beyond the amazing football success everyone remembers. This book tells the story of an incredibly difficult childhood. He had to run to the grocery store and hide from the thugs so they wouldn't steal the money his mother gave him to go to the market. He grew up surrounded by incredible racism; anyone that was different was ridiculed. His family environment was quite challenging to say the least. In spite of it all, he managed to do well in school, have high aspirations, and go onto the famous Notre Dame. Things didn't go quite as he had planned. His coach, Lou Holtz, who in some circles, walks on water, didn't see Ricky's potential or commitment. I was so impressed that Ricky didn't just rip him to shreds in the book, because had he treated me that way, I certainly would have. And that's probably what impressed me the most throughout this book. Ricky grew up, forgave, went on, and saw the good in every experience. He took responsibility for his part in everything that didn't go perfectly. The book tells the temptations of being in the NFL. The girls, the expensive jewelry, the corrupt agents that don't explain the cars they give you and your mom come out of your first paycheck, with interest. I can't believe the NFL doesn't give any media training, not even 101 to their players. I've been in PR for years, and we never let someone talk to the media that hasn't had at least one full day of training. Then there's the incredibly tragic death of his premature first born son Tiggero, and he had to go back to work and play football a few days later. I can't imagine what that must have felt like. I loved this book. It is an incredibly intimate look inside the life of a famous college and NFL football player. He's a tough guy, one that has been through the ringer, on so many levels. He has forgiven, and gone on to find meaning in his life and his family. He's more of a role model for letting go of the past than for ever hanging onto any football.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gives tremendous insight into life in the NFL and as a "superstar". He covers every aspect of the game and life. Several great messages not only for kids who dream the dream but also for society in general. It's a quick read, took only a few hours and I would highly recommend it! Thanks Ricky for a wonderful career!

A very real and indepth look at Ricky Watters the person. I really enjoyed this book. At times it made me reflect on my own life's experience. I also found the CD on the back very enjoyable as well. Ricky has got some serious rhyme going on.
Inspiring reading from one of the greatest backs in the NFL.

I have a friend who's a die hard Ricky Watters fan and I originally bought this for him. After I started leafing through it, however, I found myself reading chapter after chapter until I had finished the entire book. It was a nice change to read about a famous athlete who isn't all about "me, me me" and who is willing to help others with his life story. This book is very well written and reveals the true man behind the star running back.
Enlightening reading! Ricky Watters is the real deal!

This is definitely not your typical sports autobiography. I finished it in a day. It was entertaining, fun, educational and gave me a heavy dose of reality of life in the N.F.L. The title says it all. I felt as if I were experiencing Ricky Watters' journey first hand and could relate to many of his challenges in life, even though I am not only not a professional athlete, but I am a stay at home mom. I definitely recommend this book and I am going to pass it on to my son, who plays high school sports,as I believe he can benefit from it as well.
