"For Valor" by D. Reeman

Top quality Reeman naval action novel.. as good as the best he has written....unusually well developed characterizations of the people.

Realistic Novel of the Northern Convoys to Russia

The story of the convoys delivering supplies to the Soviet Union through German controlled waters off Norway is not often told. In 1941 when they started, they were relatively safe, only one ship was lost out of the 103 that were sent out. 1942 was another story. The most famous, or perhaps infamous, convoy was PQ-17 which lost 24 out of 33 ships to U-boats and the Luftwaffe. This book is a novel of the northern convoys. Commander Graham Martineau is still haunted by the ship he lost as he takes command of the crack Tribal Class destroyer Kakka and her weary crew to excort the cargo ships on the long run across the northern ocean. He knows whereof he writes. This is an excellent book. Probably the best since Alistair McLean's 'HMS Ulysees,' another book fo the northern convoys and long since out of print.
