How it feels to be an invisible American in your own country The struggles of an American-born woman raised in a foreign country. The courage she had to withdraw from pure survival instinct, and the ignominious acts and suffering that she endured in order to assimilate in a country that did not understand or accept her or her culture.
Ortiz may have struggled with English, but she sure doesn't have trouble putting you right there, in the middle of the action, and there is no doubt about her authenticity. I read this book in a few days. I had no trouble picking it up and enjoying it, no matter where I had left off. The world needs more women writers with a strong, sassy character. I wish I had more of that in me. The book is about circumstances and choices. Mary may have made all the wrong choices when she was young, but triumphed in spite of them. I'm looking forward to her next book.
