Young Viscount Til Duprey and his bride have accepted a post at the British office of an American news service. Everything is going along fine. For a while. Then Lord Duprey is discovered to have had "uncomfortable" dealings with the Third Reich in the past. (Things like smuggling Jewish children out of the country and having German agents arrested.) Since the Germans are out to get him anyway, the government uses him to their advantage and offers him a post with MI-5 as a translator.

Then Operation Dynamo happens. Thousands of Allied troupes are stranded at Dunkirk. Duprey is sent across the Channel aboard small fishing vessels as an observer. He uncovers even more skulduggery that almost costs him his life. That really makes him and his family a target.
