Step 1: Buy this book Step 2: Buy 3 basic recommended color dyes (Red, Blue, Yellow), black and/or 6 muted colors (Yellow, Blue, Red and Green, Orange, Grape from Dharma Trading or Pro Chemical. Also pick up some soda ash and detergent while ordering. Highly recommended: squeeze bottles or pint glass canning jars, measuring spoons and latex type gloves. Step 3: Find colors in this book you want to replicate. Mix 1 tablespoon of dye in 1 cup of water (for example, a lovely sage green uses green and black.) Follow directions. The book explains how to dye 1 yard of fabric or fat quarter pieces in gallon zip lock bags which is a great way of getting started. You do NOT want to start without reading the directions first. When the recipe calls for 1 cup of green, it means 1 cup of diluted dye, not 1 cup of powdered dye. Ask me how I know. Twice. These dyes are for natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. The same dye will color each fiber differently. You can also hand dye skeins of PFD (prepared for dying) wool. The book has 900 different recipes, light to dark. I've bought other books for dying, but I always come back to this one.
