Follow The Money: The Finances of Heaven's Gate

By Between Two Worlds

It was the event that shook America.

March 27, 1997 - 39 bodies - all with shaved heads and black androgynous clothing - were found in an upscale mansion in Rancho Santa Fe.

It was the largest mass-suicide on American soil, and as details poured-out, the story became more and more bizarre.

Now, 28 years later, the Heaven's Gate story has become a staple of the True Crime genre. Their image as a tragic New Age hippie cult has become enshrined, with annual thinkpieces released to commemorate their (still-running) website.

But, despite becoming a 30-year staple of the True Crime genre - no crime had taken place.

Right?

Follow The Money: The Finances of Heaven's Gate is a comprehensive investigation of the finances of the suicide-cult, that raises increasingly disturbing questions. How did a nomadic cult of largely-employed devotees secure a lavish lifestyle and beachfront mansion living in America's 18th most expensive suburb?
