Good reference while in Rome

The advantage of this book is that provides information to traveler about sightseeing places, hotels and restaurants. Only 1/3 of the book gives some background on places of interest in Rome. It is a brief information, but still valuable considering that most museums will not provide you any handouts or information materials except the actual entrance ticket. Book has no pictures, so if you are deciding which pretty places you want to see first, you better do some advance research on Rome before your trip. The best part of your trip could be visit to ancient city of Ostia Antica easily accessed via public transporation for only one Euro. This ancient city is only a side bar one sentence long on the page 16 of the book. Luckily, I met a couple at the hotel that made recommendation about Ostia Antica and it is one of the best things I have done on my trip wihtout ever consulting a travel book. Hopefully, the last edition (7th) of this city covers more information about this factastic "Pompeii of Rome" located on the sea.

Great guide book for a quick trip.

This guidebook was extremely helpful on our recent trip. Above all, what made it so valuable was that it had detailed guides (maps, historical background, etc.) to all the major sites. We were able to walk through the Vatican museums and the Roman Forum and actually see and understand what we were looking at thanks to this book, which was SO helpful since none of the attractions in Rome seem to provide tourists with maps or guides to the ruins/museums unless you pay extra for a tourguide or audio tour. Without the Fodor's guide, we would have been pretty lost. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants a detailed guide to Rome. I have only two complaints: 1. We found that the restaurant review section was surprisingly limited. For a city with such wonderful food we would have liked to have seen a greater variety of recommendations in the different neighborhoods. 2. The book only provides very limited information on day trips that are within an hour or so of Rome. We wanted to go to Pompei for a day, which we found to be totally doable, but the book had no information on how to make this trip or other connections beyond the suburbs of Rome. Thus, if you're interested in seeing a whole lot more beyond just the city or if you're taking an extended Italian vacation, I would probably advise picking up a book that covers more. For a quick trip like we made, however, the book was an extremely handy resource.

Great addition to your Italy travel books

This book was great to read before our trip to Italy and it was one of 3 books we took with us. It has a different take on Rome than the Rick Steve's series and I liked it's attitude about travel in Italy. It had some good recommendations for places to eat and stay. When we return to Italy I plan to buy their book on Florence.

Fast paced Rome!

What a beautiful city, full of spectacular buildings, cobblestone roads, gorgeous old windows, intricate doors, huge fountains, endless shopping, wonderful food & warm & friendly Italians! Unfortunately our trip to Rome coincided with the Pope's illness & subsequent death (while we were in Rome!), therefore we had no access to the Vatican. But it sure is stunning from outside. We had no problem finding English speaking Italians in Rome, especially in hotels, restaurants & shops. This book successfully guided us to the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Basilica & the Pantheon, just to name a few of our stops. We had a rental car, but parked it & made our way by foot & by taxi. Driving in Rome is scarier than driving in Manhattan, especially with all of the mopeds turning in many directions at the same time! This book made our days in Rome enjoyable, the restaurants suggested were all great. My husband fell in love with gelato, so we ended our days at different gelato counters. I fell in love with my daily cappucinos & pana cotta! I am not a coffee drinker, but went through cappucino withdrawls when I got home. I am now a pro at making pana cotta, oh it's divine! The road side vendors are peddling some of the best proscuitto & rocket paninni sandwiches I had in Italy! I still think about those $2 sandwiches a year later! : ) If you're planning a trip to Rome you must get this book to guide you. My husband & I talk continuously about going back again very soon.
