The giant fodder palm (Opuntia ficus indica) is a cactaceous plant with a high potential for worldwide exploitation and an important fodder source during periods of drought in semi-arid regions. This study showed the plant's viability for cryopreserving fish semen. A literature review was carried out on the main biotechniques used in gamete preservation, as well as cryopreservation experiments and computerized morphological analysis of the sperm of the fish Prochilodus brevis. The animal's semen was diluted in a solution of freeze-dried giant forage palm (ELPF) and compared to solutions of coconut water powder (ACP-104) and 5% glucose. The product tested showed a high potential for use in assisted reproduction programs.
