Don't buy this book if your not ready to work!

Almon Gunter's approach is straightforward, no excuses coaching. Reading it, I got the impression he was in the ring with me and shouting in my ear! Not that the tone is harassing, it's just that it never let's up from the beginning to the end. It's all about taking responsibility for where you are going in life and figuring out a way to get there. Gunter calls living life this way Maximum Velocity Performance. No fancy language and long, drawn out explanations. Just direct, common-sense advice about living up to your own potential. I was expecting more on physical training in the book because of Gunter's background, but this book is more of a pre-cursor to the workout. You can use it as a pep talk (on steroids) if you're already involved in a workout program. Gunter says he's coming out with a book in the future specifically focused on training.

Focusing on the basics

I loved this book! I've been a personal trainer for 30 years, and I have worked with high school, college and professional athletes ON THE BASICS for the entire time. There is nothing new under the sun. Being a success means committing to hard work, discipline and perseverance. That is why I really liked Mr. Gunter's book. There is no magic formula for being a success in life, whether you're an athlete, a student, a professional, whatever. It all comes down to focusing your mind, body and spirit on the goals that you want and never wavering from course. This is Mr. Gunter's message, and his background - coming from nothing, facing injury, aging, etc. is inspirational. The other thing I really liked about his book is that it's interactive. Many of the chapters have exercises where the reader has to think about what he/she values most and get those thoughts on paper. It makes you take a look in the mirror and do some thinking about what you stand for. I have to highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to make the most out of life. It is going to be required reading for the athletes (of any age) that I work with.

Figure out what you want in life, then go for it.

This book really spoke to me. Mr. Gunter is an Olympic-class athlete and coprorate trainter (and I'm neither!), but there was something about this book that I could really relate to. I am a mother of three and a stay at home mom who's thinking about rejoining the workforce & really has no clue what it is I want to do. I've read other self-help & career-oriented books (What Color is your Parachute, etc.) and they've been helpful to a degree, but this one really made me think about what matters most to ME. It's not a career tips book per se, but it asks you to focus on what it is you want to get out of life and how to remove the excuses that are stopping you from getting there. It's not easy, and there's no magic formula. I had to put the book down a couple times before I got through it, but I'm really glad I did. The only negative thing I could say is that it is not the cheapest book (I got it for $22), but it is a hard cover and I think the content makes it worth it. (And this is by the way the first review I've ever written for a book, so I guess that's saying a lot!). Hope you enjoy it.
