Book Overview

"The mixture of prose, mathematics, and beautiful illustrations is particularly well chosen." -- American Scientist
This monumental text by a noted authority in the field is specially designed to provide an orderly structured introduction to fluid mechanics, a field all too often seen by students as an amorphous mass of disparate equations instead of the coherent body of theory and application it should be. In addition, the book will help upgrade students' mathematical skills as they learn the fundamentals of fluid mechanics.
The text presents a unified method of analysis that poses fluid mechanics problems in precise mathematical language without becoming stiff or unnecessarily rigorous. This method involves three steps: First, the text carefully defines each problem so the student knows what is given and what is missing. Second, each chapter treats the physical aspects of the problems so the student can visualize how things work in the real world. Third, the text represents the physical model by appropriate mathematical symbols and operators, collects these into equations, and then solves them. The result is a superb learning and teaching process that covers everything the engineer needs to know -- nature of fluids, hydrostatics, differential and integral equations, dimensional analysis, viscous flows, and other topics -- while allowing students to see each element in its relation to the whole.
Each chapter contains numerous examples incorporating problem-solving techniques, demonstrations to illustrate topical material, study questions, boxed equations of significant results, appropriate references to supplementary materials and other study aids. Over 760 illustrations enhance the text. This volume will be an indispensable reference and resource for any student of fluid mechanics or practicing engineer.

One of the best books to learn Fluid Mechanics

An excellent introduction to Fluid Mechanics clearly written and well illustrated. The book balances theory and practice elegantly. It should be the first reference for anyone interested in this subject. Very didactic. I would really like to see a new edition of this book.

Great book, great price

I love this book! I borrowed it from a coworker and ended up ordering a copy for myself. The writing is clear and concise, but not too brief, making the book very understandable and useful for self-teaching. Also, as an undergraduate student, I'm on a tight budget after purchasing my regular college textbooks, but this one is quite reasonably priced. Probably the best $20 a mechanical engineering student can spend. (Also, if you are not familiar with tensors or more advanced vector calculus, Vectors, Tensors and the Basic Equations of Fluid Mechanics (Dover Books on Engineering) is another great book and makes a perfect companion.)

Fluid Mechanics (Dover Classics of Science and Mathematics)

This is an excellent book on Fluid Mechanics. It covers all the important topics that both students and practitioners are likely to encounter. Notably, the structure of the book is very logical in that it starts with the fundermentals upon which the more advanced topics are successively built. Three key features of this book are especially outstanding: 1) provision of many worked examples through out the book, 2) provision of many illustrations, including photographs, and 3) provision of problems for the reader to solve at the end of each chapter. The most notable shortcoming of this book is the fact that it does not use SI units, which are used by many countries. This is a disadvantage as far as international readers are concerned. That is not in the case for USA readers, which is probably the target market for the book. All in all, it is a 5-star book.

Outstanding & Comprehensive Introduction

Clear yet rigorous approach to a complex topic. This book provides a strong foundation for the equations of fluid motion that is quite approachable. It organizes well Navier Stokes to other equations such as Euler's and Bernoulli's. A useful text for undergraduate engineering students.

This book is very popular to undergraduate engr. students

This book has been used by several universities and adopted as the course text for several years by the US Naval Academy. It is written to strengthen student's background in applied math, and has many clever example problems. The degree of difficulty is slightly greater than most other texts on the subject but it is justified in that the aim is to improve student's math prowess.
