Now, a few years later, The Lamp is faced with closure. The sisters' funds, though not depleted, are already being put towards other essentials, and they can't afford to make the necessary improvements that the town board requires. The town blacksmith, Clay Barrett, learn of the sisters' plight, and he decides to help.

As Georgia and Clay work together, they gradually develop an affection for one another, which finally blossoms into marriage in the book's springtime conclusion.
