Florence Nightingale - The Wounded Soldier's Friend

The nurse who carried a lamp through the corridors at Scutari, told in the popular Victorian life that first appeared in 1891 and was enlarged after she died in 1910.

Eliza F. Pollard (died 1911) wrote historical novels and popular lives for a broad readership, and her account moves in scenes rather than tables: a girlhood spent among sick cottagers near the family's Derbyshire home, the long resistance of her family to the work she had set her heart on, the years of study, and then the barrack hospital where she landed in 1854 to find the sick and injured of the Crimea lying in filth. Twelve chapters carry the story from those early days to 'In Memoriam' and 'Home at Last ', the closing chapters added once she was gone.

This edition adds a chapter from Reminiscences of Linda Richards. Richards (1841 - 1930) was the first person in the United States to hold a nurse's training certificate, and in 1877 she crossed the Atlantic to study English methods, met Nightingale, and took what she learnt back to American hospitals and later to Japan. Set beside Pollard's narrative, her plain first-hand pages show how one woman's insistence on cleanliness, records, and trained staff hardened into a profession.
