Here are some tips on how to obtain professional results:
- Use soft coloring pencils. I recommend watercolor pencils as they are soft, vibrant and blend easily.
- Blend multiple layers of color. Start with lighter shades, then add darker shades on top.
- Don't press too hard. Move your hand in a different direction with different colors to achieve smoother blending.
- Don't be afraid of small details. You can color the whole flower with a lighter color, and then add some brighter color to the edge of each petal, and some darker color to the areas where you think the natural shade will be. These techniques should result in a beautiful 3-dimensional flower.
- Always remember that if the light area is warm, the shadow should be cool. For example, if you are coloring a poppy flower, the area where the sun is falling will be warm orange, the main part of the poppy will be red, the shadow should be dark cool red (sometimes I layer violet over red to achieve the right color).
- To protect your colored areas from smudging place a tissue or paper under your hand.
I create my coloring books to be interesting for the experienced colorist but also easy and satisfying for beginners. It's up to you to decide how many layers of colors and gradients you want to add. You can add only a few colors, leave some zones uncolored or color them black - you will still get interesting and satisfying results! Play, experiment, create!
