NO PEAS ALLOWED. FUZZY BEAR HUNG THE SIGN HIMSELF - A warmhearted read-aloud for ages 3 to 7, painted by hand in watercolor, about a bear who will not eat peas, the yellow pods he cannot stop eating, and the friend who never says a word.
Plump peas, shriveled peas, even juicy peas all share the very same problem, which is that they are peas. When Floppy brings out his favorite frozen ones for snacking, Fuzzy builds a small peas-mountain and eats none of it. Then the bears visit Leafy Bear's garden, and Fuzzy arrives with a plan: avoid all green things. The reddest tomatoes turn out to be tomato-like and tasty, the corn corn-like and sweet, and then there is a vine overflowing with yellow pods. Fuzzy likes those best of all.
"Unique is what must make these so good " Fuzzy giggled.
"Maybe," said Floppy.
What follows is a story about trying new things, the kindness of not saying I told you so, and an opinion that comes home from the garden without a scratch on it. The grown-up reading it gets the joke a page before the child does, and the last picture explains it to everyone. A few words a page, a garden worth lingering in, and under five minutes from beginning to end. Read it at bedtime, on a classroom carpet, or to any small person with strong feelings about vegetables.
