FLOPPY IS HAVING A BIRTHDAY. FUZZY IS HAVING THE CAKE - A warmhearted read-aloud for ages 3 to 7, painted by hand in watercolor, about a birthday that is nobody's birthday and the friend who eats it anyway.
Floppy Bear loves birthdays so much that he decides to have one today. He climbs a ladder to hang the pi ata. He hands Fuzzy Bear a polka-dotted hat with a pink pom-pom, which Fuzzy promptly squishes. And there is the cake: big, bearish, with two whole bananas stuck to the side, peels and all. Floppy has bearly begun singing before it disappears.
"Surely this cake is for eating right away " thought Fuzzy.
Then Floppy looks down, and Fuzzy, mid-bite, notices. What follows is the kindest thing a bear with a mouthful of cake can do, and a last picture of a very full bear that says everything about how a birthday should end. A few words a page, room for two bears to be bears, and under five minutes from beginning to end. Read it at bedtime, on a classroom carpet, or give it as the present that does not need a reason. For the shelf that already has Corduroy on it.
Written by Michael Vuolo, a New York City public school teacher for more than a decade, and painted spread by spread by Stephanie Gouveia. He has read this one to students who consider themselves too old for picture books. The bananas held up. So did the demand for the next book. Floppy and Fuzzy continue in The Peas, The Furstyle, and The Bearcade.
