Excellent Example of Biblical Scholarship

In this small book, Prof. Barclay takes an in-depth look at the famous passage in Galatians where Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit. Barclay goes back to the original Greek word behind each of the 15 works of the flesh (from immorality to drunkenness) and behind each of the fruits of the Spirit (from agape to self-control). He looks at the way the pagan Greeks used each word, at the way the word is used in the Greek Old Testament (the Septuagint or "LXX"), and, of course, at the way the word is used in the New Testament. As Barclay says in his preface, "any consideration and exposition of Christian Ethics must necessarily begin from as clear as possible a definition of the ethical terms of the New Testament." Barclay gives us a paradigm for doing just that.
