I loved this book and its brave, funny, quirky main character. She treads the delicate line between self doubt and calm surety with aplomb in some moments and hilarious accidental awkwardness in others, to great effect.
For good girls of all ages: Discover your inner wild woman.

I loved this book, and I learned something from it , too. As an overachieving "good girl" myself (i.e., never tell a lie--or maybe only the teensiest of little white ones; always think first of other people; always try to be responsible; never let other people down, etc.) I could identify with Teddie, the main character of Flashes and Lies. Teddie grew up with a mother, Theodora, who is flashy sexy self-centered and (is it fair?) a very successful fine art photographer. She's also a neglectful, opportunistic, and unremorseful mother. Her daughter, Teddie, vows never to be like her mother. As a result, Teddie grows up to become a rather drab responsible court reporter--always writing down other people's "truth". However, in the course of this book, through a series of funny and poignant episodes, Teddy discovers that the world doesn't fall apart if she's not always a good girl. She begins, tentatively at first, then more boldly, to explore who SHE is, and what SHE wants. This is a coming of age story for women of all ages; it happens to be about a middle-aged woman who is going through menopause (hence the word "Flashes" in the title, as in hot flashes), but it's main message is suitable for women of all ages: the biggest lie you can live is not being true to yourself.
Excellent!

An entertaining vignette into the life of a court reporter(female) experiencing more than her share of mother/daughter, aging parent, wandering husband, etc conflicts as well as hot flashes!!
