This is an anthology of seventeen personal stories that have been written by different authors, each account starting with an object such as an artefact, a photograph, a book, scraps of writings which are associated with situations, persons or time that preserve slivers of the past and prompt their recovery.

The authors tell the stories by teasing out different strands and layers of memories that the objects trigger, unwinding them and in the process laying bare myriad lives and many individual journeys. How far have they been able to trace back their roots and how long have journeys been followed, how much of the pasts are possible to retrieve and how much are lost, comprise the narratives and their singular features.

The outcome has been a rich repository of family history, of people navigating lives through challenges posed by political and social upheavals, fascinating expose of lives richly lived or agonizingly suffered. The stories give human faces to historical moments, each one holding prospects for longer and more nuanced account, plugging gaps that recorded history is often unable to do. The engagement of the author and her presence in every story makes it personal and poignant.
