Delicious Mystery

Reading this book was like enjoying a meal with friends at a casual and creative restaurant. As a heroine, Jewel has an endearing mix of confidence and self-deprecating humor. I enjoyed the eclectic character of Del and would like to know more about the intriguing Ben Harstock. The settings (especially Tacoma and Zoo U) are almost like characters themselves. I am hungry for more Blue Plate mysteries!

Peppery heroine adds spice to Tacoma/food mystery!

Such a great read! A perfect receipe for a sleuth-in-training: a catering job where the heroine, Jewel, does (and will --we hope--in later volumes about her) run into all kinds of situations requiring food as well as her talents sniffing out murder and mayhem. Kept me guessing until the end. Jewel's sassy smart-mouthing character with such a colorful conversation style provides a tasty treat for the reader in need of literary sustenance. Keep those dishes coming, Ms. Kalikoff!

delightful amateur sleuth police procedural combo

In Tacoma, Jewel Feynmann worries that her business Blue Plate Catering is failing; if she goes bankrupt she does not want to go back to the Jewish epicenter of metropolitan New York where her family awaits the return of the prodigal child. Helene Moore, who met Jewel over fried ice cream, offers the caterer work at Commencement Bay University better known as Zoo U. Because of an accidental death in the kitchen, the school needs an outside caterer. Jewel accepts the job because she needs the money. However, everything goes wrong when the Zoo U Dean Matthew Mulcahy dies from food poisoning served by Blue Plate. As Homicide Detective Ben Hartsock investigates the murder, he also tries to date Jewel, who wonders if there might be a non-kosher conflict of interest even if his kisses are tasty. Still with her company in jeopardy Jewel conducts her own investigation into the murder. DYING FOR A BLUE PLATE SPECIAL is a delightful amateur sleuth police procedural who-done-it starring a likable Jersey transplant. The story line is lighthearted in terms of the heroine's jewel of an investigation and much more professional in a support role when Ben makes inquiries. Fans will enjoy this fine Washington State blending. Harriet Klausner

Highly recommend

If Wolfgang Puck and Raymond Chandler wrote a novel together, I doubt it would be as saucy and hard-boiled as this one. Dying for a Blue Plate Special is as tasty as it gets. The novel uses the Pacific Northwest as the cold, rainy backdrop for this classic detective fiction. Save up your sick days at work, because this is one literary murder mystery that'll keep you curled up on a rainy day.-- Food Psychologist Kima Cargill, Ph.D.

Dying to Read "Dying for a Blue Plate Special"

I'm halfway through the book and it's been great so far. It's full of action and mystery. It's especially good how it keeps you in suspense every minute. I also like how it follows a struggling caterer. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries and food.
