Five Seven Five

When the Coronavirus came and much of the world was stopped in its tracks the Haiku felt like the cure for an illness- a form that exudes stillness, patience, long thoughts, observation, all from the font of nature. Tim McGillicuddy believes Haiku is an ancient form not dependent on syllables or scansions, but awareness. The awakened moment healing or transforming life. In this eastern, miniature art every syllable is precious, so the form challenges each word. Articles, prepositions, connectors are for emphatic purpose, not grammar. It is the opposite of chatting, yet a kind of chat. Sometimes an abundance of adjectives or nouns smashed together conveys the feeling best, like in conversation when one exclaims, Oh Blue purple Got it At its heart is mystery. In Five Seven Five-Haiku and Senryu, each poem stands alone. Yet for ease of reading and to economize paper, they are roughly arranged by image, subject or association in groups of three, four or five through a year, though not linear, which I hope preserves their essence.
