Lee Hunter was a Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector, who resigned from the service a couple of years ago, after falling foul of management, largely due to his out-of-control drinking. Having also lost his marriage and family, he moved from London and now lives in an English seaside town called Southport, 'where no one knows my name'. Hunter establishes a detective agency, but soon finds himself in debt and under threat of death if those liabilities aren't repaid, and with no customers, things are looking very bleak indeed. He receives a visit from a beautiful woman who offers him a job and the chance to pay back those debts. However, the job offer only to adds to his problems, as does the request to find a teenager who has gone missing under mysterious circumstances. Hunter finds himself in a web of murder, corruption and deceit involving Police, gangland bosses and millionaire business owners. Things quickly go wrong, the body count begins to rise, and Lee Hunter swiftly becomes the prime suspect.
