A mixed bag, but some of these really are good tips

It's too bad a previous reviewer was so insulted by what she saw as a bit of self-evident advice that she felt it necessary to disparage the entire book. Published by Reader's Digest, the book was written as a group effort and it shows, and some hints are clearly aimed at beginning homeowners, babysitters, or kids. But some of the tips in here--particularly those about the workshop and the house itself--are quite useful. For example, a split tennis ball can keep a pocketful of nails more manageable, and then can be used to cushion a hammer head for soft blows. Glue can be slipped under bubbled veneer with a straw. Underinsulated, and therefore overly warm, attics can lead to ice dams and then roof leaks as snow melts--first cool the attic until the water stops dribbling in, then add insulation to keep it cool. Here too are what NOT to do after a snakebite, how to quick-fix a chipped sink, using a hot iron to raise a dent in wood furniture, and a trick for getting the kids to help with the laundry. Not too shabby. It deserves better than one star.
