Randy Waters, game warden for the Trinidad District of Colorado is not very popular with people he has arrested in the past. He and a Parole Officer in Canon City begin receiving death threats. They try to discover who they have in common and try to catch the would-be killer. Waters is shot at while investigating the scene of a poaching and he calls in his Detective friend Don Pepper who helped him solve a previous case. A part-time resident butts into the investigation and winds up helping solve the case. The investigation covers the beautiful country in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Southern Colorado. The reader gets to experience the terrain through the eyes of the characters.
