Good Place To Begin For the Eager Student

From the back cover: "This easy-to-understand book is designed to help newly arrived foreigners learn essential survival Korean which is needed at the beginning stages of life in Korea. Learning is made quick and easy through romanization, a four-language index (Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese) and pictures." From the Introduction " ...Starting with Hangul letters, this book directly covers situations which foreigners most frequently cope with in a new environment. Lessons consist of bare essentials that are needed at the beginning stage of life in Korea such as introducing, questioning, giving dates and numbers, ordering food, telephoning, going on a trip, withdrawing money from a bank, shopping, using the dry cleaners, and so on." "This book emphasizes the practical use of Korean, not indulging in the detailed explanation of grammar. However, basic grammar is not ignored, but given in a simple and easy way. In each lesson, several grammar points are explained to help organize the learning of the language. However, the explanation is not exhaustive* and comprehensive, but related with the dialogs in the given lesson for the purpose of easiness of learning for the beginners without excessive confusion caused by grammar." I like this book over others I've seen (and own) because in addition to dialogs and vocabulary, it gives information and examples of Korean grammar, and has simple (at the beginning) and realistic dialogs that are actually useful in beginning conversation. Other beginning books I've tried bog down in silly dialogs that take the learner nowhere; this book is of immediate practical use because it provides more realistic dialogs that can be transferred to the real world, and has enough grammar to make the learning experience "rationalized" rather than simply a matter of rote repetition. * or exhausting!
