First Snow: Before the homecoming, there was the fall.

By: Gargan, William

Every war has a first morning.

On her forty-third birthday, Denver Fire Captain Vera Exley watches an alien ship land in Civic Center Park. The Zithari arrive bearing miracles: clean water, overnight cures, endless power. All they ask for is a little land, and volunteers. Her little sister signs up.

Then the towers rise. The birds vanish. The volunteers stop calling home. And as the first snow of December falls, the world ends in a day and a half.

From the ashes of New Denver, Vera becomes Vex, the woman who keeps four hundred survivors alive in the storm drains, fights an enemy that can't be fought, and risks everything to bring her sister home.

One night she speaks to the stars, never imagining anyone will answer.
