One year after the collapse of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1990, both Russia and Kazakhstan formed an alliance. In 2010, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus formed the customs union (CU) and later these same three states signed a treaty in 2014 forming the European Economic Union (EEU). Since the collapse of the USSR, Russia has taken the opportunity to establish varying intergovernmental initiatives to re-establish the collaboration of former Soviet states. The analytical framework of this research was developed to provide an explanation to the research question: What is Russia's pay-off for working in alliance with the EEU? We tested the explanations by using game theory as a theoretical research model. By using game theory as a theoretical model for research, we were able to explain Russia's potential pay-offs for working in alliance with the EEU.
