Deborah Sherwood's book on our First Ladies takes the reader beyond the inaugural gowns and White House china to giving a voice to the women who have been spouse,relative, friend, critic and promoter of our Presidents. The text was written as if conversing with the author. The mystique of the First Ladies is brought into focus as the reader learns of the emotional fatigue of Mrs. John Quincy Adams who entitled her autobiography, "Adventures of a Nobody" and of the ambition of a Nellie Grant whose husband turned to her after being sworn in and asked if she was now satisfied.
