Amazing evocative book for children.

I read this book when I was 12 years old recovering from having my tonsils removed. Firebird has no concept of life beyond the swamp... Until she decides to explore a little further and discovers things aren't exactly as her father tells her they are. A moving, intriguing and exciting book that stayed with me until adulthood! I had to track it down and reread it. It did not disappoint.
